// Diseases Overview

Understanding Meningococcal Disease: What It Is and How It Strikes

A fast-moving bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia, which can kill within hours of first symptoms.

How Meningococcal Disease Spreads

This bacteria spreads through close contact, like coughing, sneezing, or talking to someone infected. People can carry it without symptoms. It spreads easily in crowded, busy places like large gatherings.

Symptoms to Watch Out For

Symptoms start like the flu, with high fever, headache, stiff neck, and vomiting. Watch for a rash that doesn’t fade when pressed. Seek urgent medical help if these occur.

// Vaccine Options

The MenACWY Vaccines Available at Our Clinic

Three MenACWY vaccines are offered at our clinics, all covering four serogroups with a single dose.

MenQuadfi

MenQuadfi is another option in our range. During your visit, your pharmacist will help you choose the best vaccine based on your specific health history and age.

Menveo

Menveo is a single-injection vaccine for adults and children over two. It works just like Nimenrix, protecting against four common types of meningitis with similar effectiveness.

Nimenrix

Nimenrix is a single-dose vaccine for adults and children over two. It protects against four types of meningitis for up to five years. Your pharmacist will check if it’s right for you.

Possible Side Effects

Vaccine side effects are usually mild and quick to fade. You might feel some soreness at the injection site, a mild fever, headache, or tiredness for a day or two.

// Risk

Travellers at Greatest Risk from Meningococcal Disease

Anyone can get meningococcal disease, but destination, health status, and trip type significantly affect your personal risk level.

Risk Group
Why They Are at Higher Risk

Hajj and Umrah pilgrims

Mass gathering at pilgrimage sites creates ideal conditions for rapid transmission of meningococcal bacteria.

Travellers to the Sub-Saharan meningitis belt

Serogroup A disease is endemic across this region, with peak transmission during the dry season.

Students in shared accommodation abroad

Close-contact living environments are well-documented risk settings for meningococcal transmission.

Travellers attending large festivals or events

Crowded, close-contact settings accelerate airborne transmission significantly.

Those with asplenia or complement deficiency

These conditions hinder the body’s defense against meningococcus. Consult a specialist for scheduling before booking your appointment.

Long-stay travellers in endemic regions
Extended exposure time in the meningitis belt or other high-risk areas raises cumulative transmission risk.
