Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver, caught through contaminated food and water. It is one of the most commonly caught travel-related infections and one of the most preventable with vaccination.
Hepatitis A is transmitted via food, water and poor hand hygiene. Common offenders include raw shellfish, unpeeled fruit, salads and ice from untreated water, even in restaurants catering to tourists.
Symptoms typically appear two to six weeks after exposure and can include fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite and jaundice. In adults it can be severe and last for several months, but most people recover completely.
Hepatitis B is a viral liver infection spread through blood sex and contaminated medical or dental equipment. It is much more infectious than HIV and can cause chronic liver disease in the absence of treatment.
Hepatitis B spreads through contact with infected blood and other body fluids. Common routes of exposure for travellers include unprotected sexual contact, tattooing, piercing and medical or dental procedures with unsterilised equipment.
Lots of people with Hepatitis B feel fine to begin with and can pass it on without knowing. Symptoms, when they do occur, include fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort and jaundice. Approximately 5 to 10 per cent of adults will develop a chronic infection that leads to long-term liver problems.

Twinrix is a combined vaccine for Hepatitis A and B that works for both adults and children. It is available in adult (16 years and over) and paediatric (1 to 15 years) formulations. Your pharmacist will help choose the right schedule based on your age and trip.
Side effects are usually mild and short-lived. You might notice soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Rarely, you may feel tired or have a mild fever or headache.

The 0, 7, and 21-day accelerated schedule is for adults 18+ only. For those aged 16–17, the standard schedule applies. A pharmacist will confirm the best timeline during consultation.
Ambirix is a two-dose hepatitis A+B vaccine for children aged 1–15 (given at 0 and 6–12 months). Twinrix Paediatric requires three doses. Your pharmacist will recommend the best option based on age and travel dates.
