// High-Risk Destinations

Countries Where Cholera Is a Known Risk

Cholera risk varies by destination and is based on local sanitation, water safety and current outbreaks. The badge below is specific to your travel context and not a universal rule.

Bangladesh

Active ongoing outbreak. Risk highest in areas with poor sanitation and water access.

Mozambique

Active cholera transmission reported in some areas.

Nigeria

High burden of cases reported, particularly in areas with poor water infrastructure.

India

Low risk for most travellers. Vaccination considered for aid workers and rural visitors.

Kenya

Recommended for selected travellers visiting rural or lower-sanitation areas only.

Country advice can change quickly. Final vaccine advice should always be based on your exact route, travel style, and the latest country update at the time of appointment.

// Diseases Overview

Understanding Cholera: What It Is and How It Affects You

A bacterial infection passed on through food and water contaminated.

How Cholera Spreads

The disease is usually transmitted through unsafe drinking water, contaminated food and unhygienic conditions. The risk is greatest where sanitation is poor or access to clean water is limited.

Symptoms to Watch For

The main symptoms are vomiting, profuse watery diarrhoea, stomach pain and dehydration. Without prompt fluid replacement, severe dehydration can become dangerous very quickly.

// Vaccine Options

Your Cholera Vaccine Options Explained

Dukoral is the oral vaccine provided for travellers aged 2 and over. Adults and children from age 6 usually need 2 doses for up to 2 years of coverage, whereas children aged 2 to under 6 require a 3-dose course. Ensure the full schedule is finished at least 1 week before potential exposure.

To maintain immunity without restarting the course, boosters are recommended every 2 years for those aged 6+, or every 6 months for the younger age group.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are usually mild and temporary. Dukoral’s side effects include upset stomach, headache and other mild digestive symptoms. Severe allergic reactions are rare. Your pharmacist will tell you what to watch for when you leave.

// Eligibility

Is the Cholera Vaccine Right for You?

Most travellers do not require cholera vaccination, only if there is a greater risk in the destination.

// Risk

Travellers Most at Risk from Cholera

Risk is not equal for everyone. A hotel stay in a major city is very different from field work in an outbreak zone.

Risk Group
Why They Are at Higher Risk

Aid and relief workers

May work in outbreak settings with poor sanitation and direct exposure to unsafe water.

Travellers to remote outbreak areas

May have limited access to clean water, oral rehydration, and medical care.

Long-stay travellers in basic accommodation

More likely to rely on local water and food systems in higher-risk areas.

Travellers with certain medical conditions

Some underlying health problems may make cholera or dehydration harder to manage.

People with high-risk food and water exposure

Untreated water and unsafe food increase the chance of infection.

How to Reduce Your Cholera Risk While Travelling

The vaccine is only one part of protection. Food, water, and hand hygiene still do most of the heavy lifting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ideally, finish the course at least 1 week before travel to allow protection to build. For children aged 2 to under 6, the 3-dose course should also be completed at least 1 week before possible exposure.

Yes. You should avoid eating, drinking, and taking any oral medicines for 1 hour before and 1 hour after each dose. Let your pharmacist know about any regular medications at the time of consultation.

Yes, it can often be planned alongside other vaccines. Timing may be adjusted during your consultation depending on your full vaccine schedule.
