// Diseases Overview

What Is Jet Lag and Why Does It Happen?

More than tiredness, jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder caused by rapid travel across time zones.

What Causes Jet Lag

Your body has a natural 24-hour clock that manages your sleep and energy levels. When you travel across time zones quickly, your internal clock stays stuck on your home time, which clashes with the local day and night schedule.

Symptoms to Watch For

Common symptoms include difficulty sleeping at local bedtime, waking early, fatigue during the day, decreased concentration and irritability. They often peak in the first 2 to 3 days and then gradually improve over the next 4 to 6 days.

Jet Lag Medication Available at Our Colchester Clinic

Pharmacological treatment for jet lag is limited to melatonin provided as a PGD after assessment by a pharmacist.

Melatonin helps you adjust to a new time zone more quickly. Take one 3 mg tablet at bedtime on arrival, between 8pm and 4am local time. Avoid food for two hours either side, and don’t drink alcohol while taking it. We supply enough for both legs of your trip.

Possible Side Effects

Headaches and drowsiness are common, especially with wrong timing. Rarely, you might feel dizzy or nauseated. If you have severe or unexpected reactions, stop use and see a doctor.

// Eligibility

Is Jet Lag Medication Right for Your Trip?

Melatonin is safe for most healthy adults on long-haul flights, but eligibility depends on previous jet lag experience, health history and current medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I take melatonin for jet lag?

You will receive at least 10 tablets, enough for 5 days after arrival and 5 days after your return. The standard dose is one 3mg tablet nightly, though your pharmacist may increase this to 6mg if symptoms persist.

Melatonin can interact with oestrogen-based therapies like HRT or hormonal contraceptives. Disclose all medications during your consultation so the pharmacist can assess suitability.
